Come to Me and Drink

Reflection

Jesus stood up and cried out. Earlier, His brothers told Him to go out, and He said it was not yet His time (John 7:6–8). Now, on the last and greatest day of the feast, the time has come. Jesus publicly presents Himself and boldly invites the people to salvation and eternal life through faith in Him. This is a plea of love and grace.
“If anyone thirsts.” Thirst symbolizes spiritual need, lack, and inability. We are spiritually hungry and in need of Christ. Apart from Him, we cannot please God or produce true righteousness. Without Jesus, we are nothing but sinners. God calls us because He knows our needs and offers us the only source of spiritual life.
“Come to me and drink”. “Come” is an invitation, and “drink” shows faith. To drink is to receive Christ by faith—to trust Him fully and depend on Him. Jesus continually extends His grace, knocking patiently on our hearts, calling us to respond and open our hearts to Him.
“Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water“. This is a wonderful promise from Jesus. He humbled Himself to come to earth, pleading for us to believe in Him so we could receive the living water—the Holy Spirit. At this time, the Spirit had not yet been given because Jesus had not yet entered into His glory. This living water sustains us in salvation and participates in our journey of sanctification. Jesus’ love is extraordinary, offering us what we could never earn or deserve.

May we be sensitive to the call of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.
Jesus continually knocks, inviting repentance and ongoing faith.
May we never take for granted the sacrifices He made for our eternal life.
May we maintain a thirst for knowing Him more, glorifying Him in every circumstance of life.
Let us come to Him daily, trusting and receiving His Word, allowing it to transform our lives and produce the fruits of faith.
May we hold fast to Him, confident in the salvation He has secured for us.
