Reflection
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.”
- This is a clear declaration of God’s sovereignty. Jesus plainly says that we cannot come to Him by our own effort. Apart from God working in us first, we are incapable of responding rightly to Him.
- Our natural inclination is toward sin. Our flesh will always choose what it desires, not what God desires. Without God transforming our hearts, our wants will never align with His will. Coming to Christ begins with God’s gracious initiative—He draws us first.
“And they will all be taught by God.”
How does God teach us?
- Through Scripture — the primary way God reveals His will, character, and truth.
- Through pastors and preaching — grounded in and flowing from Scripture.
- Through circumstances — which must always be tested against what God has already revealed in His Word.
By reading the Bible, we come to know God more deeply—His precepts, His character, and His heart. And as we know Him more, our relationship with Him grows deeper. That is why we seek Him and obey—not out of duty, but out of love, because He loved us first.
“Knowing the Father through the Son”
- Jesus makes it clear that through Him, we know the Father. He and the Father are one. To love Jesus is to love the Father. To believe in the Son is to believe in God the Father.
Jesus came down:
- In obedience to the Father, and
- Out of great love for us.
What father would sacrifice his son for people who do not deserve it? No one—yet God did. We cannot fully grasp the depth of the Father’s love in sending His Son, nor the depth of Jesus’ love and obedience in laying down His life. The sacrifice was entirely one-sided. We did not deserve it—but He willingly did it so that we might have eternal life through Him. God draws us first, and our response of faith is itself enabled by His grace.
Application
May we continue to seek Him and know Him more deeply through:
- Reading Scripture faithfully
- Obeying what God reveals in His Word
- Walking with wise counsel
- Listening attentively to God’s Word through preaching and sermons
May we continually bless the Lord and urge our souls to do the same (Psalm 103:1). And may we recognize God’s work within us and respond with gratitude—through obedience, glorifying Him, and honoring His name. And may we never forget to be deeply thankful for the life of Jesus, who redeemed us from the Father’s wrath, and who remains our strength when our flesh is weak, enabling us to obey and respond in faith.
